Bessie Coleman was the first Black woman — and the first Native American woman — to earn an international pilot’s license. Denied entry to every U.S. aviation school because of her race and gender, she went to France, learned to fly, and returned as “Brave Bessie,” performing death-defying airshows nationwide. She broke barriers others didn’t even dare approach and inspired generations to rise above the limits placed on them.
