Durham, North Carolina — the other Black Wall Street.

While Tulsa is more widely known, Durham’s Parrish Street flourished as early as the late 1800s. Home to powerful Black-owned businesses like North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company and Mechanics and Farmers Bank, it was a symbol of economic independence and self-determination.

For decades, this stretch of Black excellence thrived — despite segregation, redlining, and systemic obstacles. It wasn’t just about wealth. It was about empowerment and ownership.
