Produced by Arthur Baker and John Robie, the track merged hip hop beats with electronic synths, drawing direct inspiration from Kraftwerk’s “Trans-Europe Express.” The result? A brand new genre: electro-funk.

This was more than a song — it was a declaration. With robotic rhymes, electronic drum machines, and a pulsating groove, “Planet Rock” pushed boundaries and paved the way for techno, house, freestyle, and Miami bass. It also marked one of the earliest hip hop records to be truly global in scope.

Released on the groundbreaking Tommy Boy Records, the label’s bold design became a signature of the emerging underground. The original 12-inch pressing of “Planet Rock” flew off shelves and into crates across the world, and the design on this tee preserves that moment when hip hop went galactic.
