“I said a hip, hop, the hippie, the hippie to the hip hip hop…”
Released in 1979, “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang marked a historic moment — the first rap single to break into the Billboard Top 40 and the first many people ever heard of hip hop. Built around the infectious bassline from Chic’s “Good Times,” the song introduced the art of rapping to the world with its playful, party-starting verses.
Although hip hop was born in the parks of the Bronx, “Rapper’s Delight” brought the culture to turntables everywhere, helping launch a global movement. The track’s call-and-response energy and storytelling rhymes paved the way for future generations of MCs.
Released by the pioneering Sugar Hill Records, founded by Sylvia Robinson, the 12-inch single became an instant hit — with its bold blue label and graffiti-inspired logo standing out in every crate. This tee showcases that original label design in all its vintage glory.
From the block to the Billboard charts — this is where it all began. Rock “Rapper’s Delight” and represent the roots of the culture.
