In 1919, Alice H. Parker patented a design for a gas-powered, central heating system — a concept far ahead of its time. Her invention allowed people to heat different areas of a home individually, laying the groundwork for modern thermostats and HVAC systems.
At a time when few women — especially Black women — were recognized in science or tech, Parker’s idea was revolutionary. Though she never received the credit she truly deserved, her design reshaped how we live and stay warm to this day.
