John Standard changed the way we preserve food with his patent for an improved refrigerator design in 1891. At a time when Black inventors were denied opportunity and recognition, Standard’s innovation made cold storage more accessible, efficient, and practical for homes across America.

His contributions helped shape the foundation of modern kitchen appliances — even though his name was often left out of history books.
