They were free on paper. But not in practice.
Though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced to the last enslaved Black people that they were finally free.
That moment became known as Juneteenth — short for June Nineteenth — the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the U.S.
For generations, it was our independence day. A day of cookouts, community, remembrance, and joy. In 2021, it was finally made a federal holiday — but we’ve been celebrating.
This tee is a tribute to the truth: freedom wasn’t given — it was claimed.
