Before Essence. Before Ebony. There was The Colored American Magazine.
Founded in 1900 in Boston, The Colored American Magazine was the first monthly publication produced entirely by and for Black Americans. It celebrated Black excellence, uplifted Black voices, and challenged the mainstream narratives of the time.
Led by visionary editor Pauline Hopkins, the magazine published stories, essays, poems, and news highlighting Black intellect, art, and social justice — making it a true pioneer in Black media.
This design pays tribute to the first Black-owned publication that dared to document our stories on our terms.
More than a magazine — it was a movement. Wear the story of the original Black press with pride.
