“Let’s funk for Jamaica — just because…”
Released in 1980, “Funkin’ for Jamaica (N.Y.)” is a funk-jazz fusion masterpiece by trumpeter Tom Browne. Inspired by his hometown of Jamaica, Queens, the song is a soulful tribute to the community that raised him — filled with slick horn riffs, deep pocket bass, and a silky vocal performance from Toni Smith.
The track quickly became an urban anthem, climbing to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart and remaining one of the most sampled and celebrated grooves in hip hop, R&B, and dance circles. With its chill-yet-funky vibe, it became a favorite at skating rinks, block parties, and sound system sessions alike.
Released on GRP Records in association with Arista, the 12-inch vinyl gave DJs a high-fidelity jam to ride through summer nights and city streets. The original label artwork — clean, classic, and era-defining — is faithfully printed on this tee, preserving that hometown pride in wearable form.
Represent Queens and ride the groove. Wear “Funkin’ for Jamaica” and stay true to the funk.
